We are beginning the big wholesale season with the change in the weather. We have been doing some wholesale all summer, but when the packing line starts humming, the big season begins. This is a good thing, because it gives the crew some indoor work when it is really cold and wet outside. But at least part of the time has to be spend outdoors, harvesting the crops in the first place!
One of our biggest wholesale buyers is long-time farm protector, advocate and supporter PCC Natural Markets. This Seattle-based food cooperative really walks the walk when it comes to buying from local farms, instead of going for cheap organics from foreign countries. For example, this week, they have ordered 50 cases of bunched carrots, and Ben Rivers (above) is helping to get the boxes ready. PCC has a dozen natural foods stores in the Seattle area, so only a few of them will get these carrots. But they order pretty consistently, so eventually all their customers will have an opportunity to try this amazing taste of Dungeness. Their orders continue all winter, hitting their peak the week before Thanksgiving.
